THE COMMISSION ON THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD ON PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

The Commission on the Future of Agriculture on Prince Edward Island was established on May 1, 2008 to articulate a long-term vision for agriculture and agri-food and recommend an implementation strategy. While the Commission recognizes that there are pressing short-term economic issues facing PEI's agriculture sector, our focus is on a longer term vision and solutions. Accordingly, we would appreciate your response to the following questions.

1. After reviewing the Commission's State of Agriculture Report, does the information in the report accurately reflect the state of agriculture in PEI? Does it tell the full story?

2. Of our 1700 census farms, it is estimated that the 640 farms with gross income of over $100,000 generate about 80% of PEI's farm cash receipts. The remaining 1060 farms generate about 20 %. Given that economic viability is an important issue, what vision of the future should we have for each of these two groups of farms?

3. What do you / your organization see as three significant innovative market opportunities for PEI's agriculture and agri-food sector over the next 5 to 10 years?

4. Given the international and Canadian realities that impact PEI's agriculture and agri-food sector, on what strategic advantages should we build our vision of the future of PEI agriculture and agri-food? How can we use those advantages in agri-business opportunities to attract/ retain the people and capital required to renew agriculture in PEI over the next 5 to 10 years?

5. What policy and / or institutional changes would be necessary to achieve your vision for the future of PEI's agriculture and agri-food sector?
