Growing The Island Way
In its press release, the Commission on the Future of Agriculture and Agri-food on Prince Edward Island has challenged farmers and food processors to be leaders in a bold new vision of growth, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability for the Province's largest industry. The twelve-member Commission released a Consultation Draft Report on October 30, 2008 after hearing over 40 presentations, reviewing written submissions, and holding a dozen Commission meetings over the summer and fall. This document will promote discussion, debate, and consensus building at a series of consultation workshops with agri-food system partners scheduled for November 25, 27 and 28, 2008.
Frequently Asked Questions
THE COMMISSION ON THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD ON PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Why has the Commission been established at this time?
A number of industry groups, including the Federation of Agriculture and the National Farmers Union, have requested that government facilitate a process to establish a shared, long-term vision and strategy for the agriculture industry. The Standing Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Environment has also recommended a unified vision for the industry to guide its future growth and development.
It is broadly recognized that the current commodity model of agriculture is not working for all sectors of the industry. A "Made in PEI" approach is needed if the industry is to build on its strengths and opportunities.
Who does the Commission report to?
The Commission will report to the Prince Edward Island Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Ultimately, it is accountable to the agriculture and agri-food industry and the public of Prince Edward Island.
Who are the members of the Commission?
In addition to the co-chairs, Rory Francis and Dr. Ed Tyrchniewicz, the members include representatives of producers, retailers, agri-businesses, and the public. A project management team with two representatives from each of the federal and provincial governments and industry will oversee the process. A small project secretariat has been established to support the work of the Commission.
How will the Commission carry out its work?
The first step is the preparation of a background document on the current state of agriculture in Prince Edward Island. This document will help focus discussions and consultations on a vision and long term plan for agriculture on PEI. The Commission will consult broadly, with experts, industry and the public through a series of meetings in August to October.
The process is designed to allow industry groups and organizations, as well as individuals, to provide their ideas and suggestions.
How long will this process take?
Government has asked that a draft report be completed by October 14. The final report is expected by early December.
What will happen to the report after this process has been completed?
The Final Report will include a plan for the implementation of the report's recommendations. This implementation process will provide accountability measures to ensure that all stakeholders, including government, retailers, consumers and producers play their optimal role to ensure the implementation of the report's recommendations.
This process is about a long term vision and strategy for the industry. What about the immediate needs of producers?
The provincial government will continue to work with the federal government and with all sectors of the industry to do what it can to help producers deal with the current crisis. Government has already responded to some sectors, and will continue to act when possible.
How can I provide input to the Commission on issues or possible ideas for the future of agriculture and agri-food on PEI?
Individuals and organizations are encouraged to respond to a series of questions that can be found on the web site. These questions are designed to obtain feed back on the challenges facing the Agriculture sector and to provide an opportunity for individuals to suggest ideas for a sustainable future for PEI's agriculture and agri-food sector.
